New day for long-standing non-profit

April 23, 2013, Benton Harbor, Michigan – Michigan Works! Berrien, Cass, Van Buren, a nonprofit in Benton Harbor, has a long standing history of providing local businesses quality workforce talent, and developing job seekers to meet employers’ needs. In the past several years, the organization has expanded its services and diversified its funding streams in order to better meet community needs and create solutions for the challenges that keep the region from thriving. The transformation into an organization that addresses regional economic challenges through integrated business, workforce, and community development culminates today in the unveiling of a new brand called Kinexus.

Kinexus Executive Director, Todd Gustafson explains the reason for the rebranding, “For the past several years we’ve been working diligently to address many of southwest Michigan’s regional challenges. We have sort of outgrown our Michigan Works brand in that we have expanded our focus beyond workforce development.”

The name Kinexus, pronounced “connects us,” was inspired by the word kinetic meaning movement and nexus meaning a hub. “This describes our team perfectly—we’re constantly looking for ways to improve our community and connect resources, businesses, and people to promote economic growth,” Gustafson said. “The new brand represents our focus on being change agents who create solutions for business, workforce, and community challenges to promote economic vitality in the southwest Michigan region.”

Michigan Works will remain a sub-brand of Kinexus, which now becomes the parent company that houses three divisions of the organization: business development, workforce development and community development. The Kinexus portfolio includes such services as the Small Business Technology and Development Center, the Bridge Academy, Jobs for America’s Graduates, and a host of industry-sector initiatives that grow the economy.

Kinexus invests approximately $10-$13 million each year in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties through its diverse services and special initiatives. Kinexus launches its campaign today with billboards, ads and a new website at www.Kinexus.org. ###
