“Tour de Fired” Coming to Benton Harbor: Author of A Man’s Guide to Getting Fired to present at Michigan Works!
September 14, 2011 Benton Harbor, MI – The public is invited to two free presentations by Michigan resident Andrew Kilbride, author of A Man’s Guide to Getting Fired. Kilbride will engage members of the community on September 21, 2011 at the Michigan Works! Benton Harbor Service Center, 499 W. Main Street. Two similar presentations will take place, the first at 11:00 a.m. and the second at 2:00 p.m.
Kilbride, who played professional basketball before being let go from several jobs that followed, will speak candidly about charting a new path after losing a job. While the book was written for men and includes chapters entitled MAN-ifesto and Burn Your Suits, women are also likely to find Kilbride’s perspective entertaining and enlightening.
Those who attend the event will find that Kilbride is one part honest friend, “Did you really grow up thinking you’d be a middle manager for a major milk manufacturer?” One part down to earth spiritual advisor, “Here’s what to do now, breathe in positive, breathe out negative. It may sound like some Zen mumbo jumbo, but it is the beginning of a process of keeping all of the positives and shedding all of the negatives.” And one part career counselor, “Write it down, everything you can think of in the work that you like, just write it all down in a simple list.”
Kilbride’s presentation is a part of regular meetings Michigan Works! hosts for people who have been laid off or terminated from their jobs. In addition to presentations, the meetings offer various trainings on how to update and polish a resume, utilize internet job sites, and provide an opportunity to connect with other professionals for advice, contacts, and emotional support.
